St. Jerome

Franciscan Monastery, Zadar, Croatia

As so often in Croatia, Jerome is pictured holding a maquette of a church. He wears the traditional red cardinal's hat, but alas there is no lion.

The statue is part of a collection of four in the monastery. All four are in the same medium and style. The statue of Simeon in that group has a naked Christ Child, a feature of 15th- and 16th-century Presentation in the Temple images, so the Jerome is probably from that same period.
